Some people have mentioned that they want to learn how to draw, but have problems creating even the simplest cartoon characters.  I always believe that if there is a will, there is a way.  People tend to get scared to even try because they feel intimidated.  But did you know that you can create simple cartoon characters using basic shapes? Here is a tutorial that will allow you to create a cartoon bug using the Elipse.

I did the first drawings on Illustrator and then later on moved to Photo Shop to render the outlined character.  In this case, a bug or you can say it is a cartoonized bug.  Majority of the shape used in this drawing is the Elipse.  The elipse is a basic shape (circular) that can be manipulated by clicking on the various tabs available in Illustrator.

Step 1 -

Open a file in Illustrator. The size can be 8 inches width x 11 inches height. Then click on the elipse tab and set the size to W=1.2809 x H = 1.5432.

That will form the eyes of our bug. Create 2 of the same size. Making sure that the eye on the left is on top of the right eye.  You can do that by pressing the tab object then select arrange then click send to front.  You can create the smaller dots by creating smaller elipses.  Do one for each eye.

The elipse can be changed into different shapes just by clicking on to the anchor mark and either pull to the left or right or up or down to change the shape and size.

Step 2 -

Create the head and body of the bug by clicking again on the elipse tool found at the left side of your screen (menu).  Create an elipse W 1.9444in x H 1.2654 inches.  Make  sure that the eyes are on top of the body.  You can do that by pressing the tab object then select arrange then click send to front.

Step 3

Create the wings of our bug by again, clicking on to the elipse and create a circle W= 1.8363 x H= 1.83673.  Click on the direct selection tool on the menu bar.  You will see that it will create lines that you can click on to allow you to re shape your elipse.  click on the center of the bottom of the elipse.

After clicking, pull the anchor point slightly upward going to the right, there you will see that an indent will be created.  To make the 2nd wing.

Copy and paste so that you have the 2nd wing created.  Place on top of the bugs back and make sure that it is again arranged so that it is layered on top of the head and the eye.

Step 4

Create the mouth.  In order to do that one must first create an elipse, then create a rectangle and place it on the middle half of the circle.  Click on both shapes then merge using the intersect shape found on the pathfinder bar menu.

After clicking you will notice that the lower part of the circle remains.  Copy and paste and resize the 2nd semi circle and place inside the mouth for the tongue.

Step 5

Place the mouth on to the body of the bug below the eyes.  Click on the menu and click on the pencil tab (stroke #8) to create the bug’s legs.

Now our drawing is done.  See you have created a cartoonized bug with just basic shapes.

In order to bring life to our character, we would also need to put color on our drawing.  Just make sure that the outline for the body and the entire bug is Stroke number 5.  Now to render we would need to save our work and open it on PhotoShop.

The image will truly come alive after you have rendered the drawing you did.  Make sure to add texture and detail as it does make a big difference to the finished drawing.  Hope you like the drawing, see, with just simple shapes on can create interesting cartoonized characters.  All one needs to do now is practice, practice, practice and let your imagination soar.
