How To Improve Your Personal Brand on Twitter!

Writing for Bit Rebels and Ink Rebels takes majority of my free time, next is Twitter!  Twitter has become a big part of my life.  If you do not see me updating my FaceBook or playing games on the site, you will most probably see me very active on Twitter.

Was very fortunate to have been involved on the social networking platform early. on.  I have learned so many things that I have been sharing to people as I do want everyone to fully maximize their experience on Twitter.

I have been asked a lot of times already, how does one get followed by the right people on Twitter? The best way really is to make sure that you give much attention to your  personal brand.  YOU!  As more and more people want better engagement with the people they follow, plus the onslaught of bots and spammers, Twitter users have become more focused and would want to interact with people that they know they will learn from.  So here are some of the tips based on personal experience that I hope will enable you to improve your personal brand on Twitter.

Use an Avatar

Your avatar is the picture that you use to represent who you are on the social networking platform.  Avatars vary from the cartoonize, to your actual photo.  Some make use of their own photo with a super imposition of their logo.

Use an appropriate photo!  A good gauge would be, if you see a person using an inappropriate photo will you follow him or her? If your answer is no, then you might not want to use that (too loud, or almost naked photos).

Create a Twitter Background

Your Twitter Background is one element that can really help you with your personal branding.  It is like your ad if you look at it in the promotions perspective.  It is the first place that people will look at when deciding if they want to follow your or not.  There are several ways for you to design your Twitter Background page and most of them are Free.  You can even hire designers to do them for you.  You can check out @TwitterBGGallery for inspiration.

Write a clear BIO

Another way for someone to know more about you is via your BIO.  The bio allows you to share what you are interested in, what you do and the site where they can read more about you.  So take extra effort in making sure that you do write your bio.

Tweet Useful  Content and Engage

Yes, tweeting useful and helpful content is always a good way for you to improve your personal brand on Twitter.  It is always a good way for people to know if they should follow you or not.  Engaging is the way for people to know you even more, what you are thinking right now, what you love doing in real time.  So take time to converse with the people you follow.  Don’t just share links, listen and speak! If you take a look at the list above, they are really simple to execute, but often times they are neglected or taken for granted.  Taking that extra step to improve your brand will definitely make your Twitter experience more meaningful and fun!

What do you think?  Please share your thoughts on how else one can improve their brand on Twitter, would love to hear your thoughts.

Misty, That's a useful post. Some essential basics revisited and they are often forgotten by newbies to Twitter. Good one

Excellent list of advice to follow for the Twitter newbie. I think that many people take these steps for granted. If you follow these steps, and then focus on providing useful/helpful content and engaging with your followers, I think you'll attract an audience and what's more, an strong and engaged audience.

Hey Misty, nice post. Having a good background helps a lot setting your account apart from most of the twitter accounts.
And for me content is the most important thing. Without that you shouldn't expect much to happen

Thank you Rahul! Yes so true, often times people would get their avatar in place as well as their BG but forget that Tweeting good content is so important too. It is part of your brand profile, people will know you as well with the tweet you send out! :) It should be relevant and interesting.

Ok here is the deal. I blog in french, I only twit in english. Fortunately these things listed are in line with i'm doing to promote my brand. But the lack of followers is just killing me. I can't twit in french because they are not that many on twitter. I mean they are here but not interested in my brand. Help Misty please.

I see your dilemma, what i think you can actually do is have a way for people to translate your site into English like other brands do. That way, people can still read your content. I don't see any problems with tweeting with your own language too as most of the 3rd party apps for twitter like TweetDeck have translators that allows others to read you tweets. Technology has given us ways to over come any barriers!! You know I do read foreign language blogs, if they are not equipped to translate then i use google translate, they now can translate an entire website. Hope i made sense :)

Thank You Misty o got the point you made sense. But there is still this "followers" question. My blog is about everyday life. Am a poet, artist, choreagrapher, and i wanted to share with the world what an artist thinks about and lives everyday...

Getting followed on Twitter does take a lot of time, just consider the following: Tweet good content, try to converse with people and you are on your way to getting followed. And for your blog, getting followed also takes a bit of time. tweet your links and share on other networking sites. That also helps. Our blog Ink Rebels (http://www.inkrebels.com) is a blog about writing and blogging maybe if you have time you can check it out and see if the articles can be of help to you.

Misty, great post about personal branding using Twitter. Having an avatar, custom background, and filling out your bio is standard. If you don't do it, then people aren't going to follow you back or interact. It legitimizes you as a brand.

Thank you Dan!! I have followed your blog on personal branding ever since I started writing and Tweeting! I truly agree with you, it does bring legitimacy to our personal brand! :) Really appreciate your taking time to my sketch studio
